What is Semana Santa?
This week sees the Easter Holy week, a Catholic holiday celebrated all over the world. In Costa Rica this means a weeklong of festivities and traditions.
The holy week or Semena Santa is celebrated for an entire week before Easter Sunday and in Costa Rica this week is a public holiday. If you arrive in Costa Rica during this week expect parades, religious processions and mini festivals! The actual holiday during this week is celebrated on the Thursday and Friday before Easter Sunday.
Many Ticos head for the beaches to enjoy some sun and relaxation or simply spend time with loved ones at home and enjoy traditional cuisines like tamales and sea food.
