Costa Rica Independence Day

with No Comments

On September 15th Costa Rica will celebrate 197 years of being independent from Spain. The Independence Day of Costa Rica has been declared an official national holiday in the country and is celebrated with much joy.  The national holiday is marked by raising the National Flag, patriotic parades and the singing of the National Anthem. Even though September 15th is Costa Rica’s official Independence Day, festivities begin on the 14th, so if you are or know of anyone in the country during those two days you are in for a treat!

So, what has happened in Costa Rica since becoming independent – well the answer is a lot of things! Let’s look at the top three things we believe stand out the most about Costa Rica for a tourist.

  1. No army

This year the country celebrated 70 years since abolishing the army. After a bitter civil war which left the country in despair, the Costa Rican government at the time decided they never want the country or its people to have to be in such a situation again and they abolished the army. Instead investing the money in to education. 70 years on and the country still believes in the idea if you want peace you have to lead by example. Today the UN headquarters are based in the capital San Jose, recognising the country as the leaders of peace and Costa Rica is considered the safest country in Central America. If you take a city tour in San Jose, you will see the remains of the civil war.

  1. Leaders in sustainability

Having 5% of the worlds biodiversity and a country that’s is one big natural playground means tourist especially from Europe can’t get enough of Costa Rica. What is impressive is not that Costa Rica has all this flora and fauna, but the efforts made to protect the land and the rare species that call this country home. 25% of the land is protected by national parks and they aim to become the first country carbon neutral. Costa Rica has been named a 21st Century Environment Leader and they truly are!

  1. Wellbeing of its citizens

The average life expectancy in Costa Rica is 77 years old one of the highest in the world and the Nicoya Peninsula is a blue zone (there are only five in the world). A blue zone is where people are the healthiest and live the longest. So, what’s the secret? Well we say it’s Pura Vida living – Pura Vida means ‘pure life’ – living a life that is healthy mentally and physically in other words being the best version of yourself. In a country that is all about being part of nature and love, how can you not be the best version of yourself?

There is nothing but love from the Costa Rican citizens also known as ‘Ticos’ and out of everything the country has achieved since becoming independent this is the one thing they should be the proudest of – having such positive and loving citizens! If you don’t believe us, then ask the happy planet index who voted Costa Rica as the happiest place in the world.
