In September, Costa Rica received the 2019 Champions of the Earth<\/em> award, the UN\u2019s highest environmental honour, for its role in the protection of nature and its commitment to ambitious policies to combat climate change. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP)\nhas recognised Costa Rica in the policy leadership category.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A world leader in sustainability, the Central\nAmerican country has submitted a detailed plan to decarbonise its economy by\n2050, in line with the Paris Climate Agreement and the UN\u2019s\u2019 Sustainable\nDevelopment Goals. The plan hopes to provide an example for other countries to\ncurb the deadly emissions causing rapid, disastrous climate change. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Costa Rica\u2019s success in placing environmental\nconcerns at the heart of its political and economic policies is evidence that\nsustainability is both achievable and economically viable. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cCosta Rica has been a pioneer in the\nprotection of peace and nature and sets an example for the region and for the\nworld,\u201d says Inger Andersen, Executive Director of the United Nations\nEnvironment Programme. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cClimate change demands urgent and\ntransformative action from all of us. With its ambitious plans to decarbonise\nthe economy, Costa Rica is rising to that challenge,\u201d she added. \u201cGlobal\nemissions are reaching record levels and we must act now to move to cleaner,\nmore resilient economies.
