Lonely Planet highlights the country\u2019s biodiversity and initiatives towards sustainable tourism and mentions that the local catchphrase pura vida \u201cis more than a saying, it\u2019s a way of life\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Published annually, Lonely Planet\u2019s Best in Travel picks the\ntop ten countries, regions, cities and value destinations which are \u201care the\nbest of the best\u201d to visit during the following year. Writers, editors and\nsocial media influencers put destinations forward, which are then whittled down\nto ten by Lonely Planet\u2019s panel of travel experts. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lonely Planet\u2019s Best in Travel mentions that \u201cCosta Rica\nflies the flag for sustainable tourism\u201d and showcases the country\u2019s \u201cvast\nbiodiversity\u201d, which attracts visitors to spot sleepy sloths and red-eyed\nfrogs. The guide also highlights the fact that Costa Rica aims to become one of\nthe world\u2019s first countries to suppress carbon emissions by 2050 \u2013 as\nestablished in the National Decarbonisation Plan presented earlier this year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mar\u00eda Amalia Revelo Ravent\u00f3s, Costa Rica\u2019s Tourism Minister,\ncomments: \u201cWe are absolutely thrilled that Costa Rica has been included within\nLonely Planet\u2019s Best in Travel 2020. The country is currently going through one\nof its best moments thanks to sustainable programmes such as the National\nDecarbonisation Plan and the Integral Management of Tourism Destinations \u2013 so\n2020 is one of the most exciting times to visit us\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The recognition of Costa Rica as one of the world\u2019s Top Ten\nCountries follows the recent Champions of the Earth award by the United Nations\n(UN).
