{"id":1466,"date":"2018-11-25T20:47:59","date_gmt":"2018-11-25T20:47:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.puravidauniversity.eu\/uk\/?p=1466"},"modified":"2018-11-25T20:52:49","modified_gmt":"2018-11-25T20:52:49","slug":"costa-rica-drive-tourism-growth-hotel-investment-rural-tourism-initiative","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.puravidauniversity.eu\/uk\/costa-rica-drive-tourism-growth-hotel-investment-rural-tourism-initiative\/","title":{"rendered":"Costa Rica to drive tourism growth through hotel investment and rural tourism initiative"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Costa Rica is aiming to grow its tourism by 6% per year globally, its tourism minister has revealed.<\/p>\n<div class=\"ao-Image ao-DS6-NST\">\n<div><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"ao-DS6-Image ao-W100 aligncenter\" title=\"Maria Amalia Revelo, Costa Rican tourism minister\" src=\"https:\/\/d2osdnqd2igqfx.cloudfront.net\/AcuCustom\/Sitename\/DAM\/122\/Maria-Amalia-Revelo.jpg\" alt=\"Maria Amalia Revelo, Costa Rican tourism minister\" width=\"546\" height=\"364\" \/><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ao-DS6-N WYSEdit\">\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Mar\u00eda Amalia Revelo Ravent\u00f3s told TTG@WTM she hoped to boost visitor numbers by \u201cincreasing operations in terms of flights\u201d and widening the choice of hotels for visitors.<\/p>\n<p>Ravent\u00f3s said tourism numbers from Europe were up by 6.1% year-on-year in 2018, with 339,446 visitors from January to August this year.<\/p>\n<p>The US, which is Costa Rica\u2019s number one market in terms of visitor arrivals, grew to 1,160,000, up by 5.1% year-on-year. Canada, the country\u2019s second largest tourist market, also grew by 5.1% in 2018, with 154,464 visitors from January to August.<\/p>\n<p>Ravent\u00f3s said in particular she saw growth in the European market as \u201ca great opportunity\u201d, adding that new flight capacity in recent years from the likes of British Airways, Lufthansa and KLM had allowed Costa Rica \u201cto have a bigger market share in a high end market.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She added that European visitors tended to be more adventurous, visiting numerous locations within the country and staying an average of 17 nights.<\/p>\n<p>Driving rural tourism will be a key focus for the destination next year, with the tourist board planning to work with small and medium-sized hotels \u201cto open new areas for tourism\u201d and avoid overcrowding, said Raventos.<\/p>\n<p>She added the tourist board would work closely with the private sector and local government bodies to develop stronger tourism ties in lesser-visited parts of the country.<\/p>\n<p>The country has invested $210 million in hotel development since March 2018.
